IAJ STATEMENT
Each day we see reports of the most horrific actions done in Ukraine with unimaginable fear, pain, suffering and loss of life.
We are an international association of judges committed to the rule of law and will maintain that position with all of our ability and even when things seem obvious.
We do, however, call for the violence to end immediately. Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights enshrines the universal value of human life.
There are international avenues for disputes to be resolved through mediation, adjudication and judgment. There is no occasion for violence and never against unarmed civilians. There are also forums for anyone committing war crimes to be judges impartially and brought to justice.
Our association has the benefit of representing judges from 94 countries committed to an independent judiciary and ant the rule of law we appeal to all to restore reasoned judgement and the end of violence. To that end we urge also those international authorities, in particular the relevant bodies of United Nations, urgently start an independent investigation, and collect evidence about what is occurring.
It is important for any impartial judicial process that may subsequently be established be able to identify those responsible for acts which continue to be broadcast worldwide, in order to an expeditious punishment in accordance with the Law.
