As part of the virtual meeting of the Asian, North American and Oceanian (ANAO) Regional Group of the IAJ-UIM, held this week the Honourable Caroline Kirton, Judge of the Federal Circuit Court of Australia, presented a paper on unconscious or implicit bias in the Justice system. It is attached.
One commentator observed : If Lady Justice is truly blind to one’s race, gender, sexual orientation, wealth, and power, and that if her scales truly represent impartiality and equality, then we as her judicial officers must ensure that these principles remain at the forefront of our unconscious and conscious minds when we are making our decisions. To do otherwise would be a gross dereliction of our duties and also an affront to our respective judicial oaths.
Justice Kirton’s paper and the commentaries are attached.
